
MONROVIA – Liberia and Sweden are joyously commemorating their 65 years of friendship this year, marking a significant milestone in their enduring alliance.
The roots of collaboration between these two nations stretch back to 1958, when Sweden established diplomatic relations with Liberia and made a substantial investment in the Liberian mining industry. In more recent times, Sweden has emerged as a key benefactor, generously contributing to Liberia’s peacebuilding endeavors and overall development.
Amidst an atmosphere of jubilation, Liberian President George Weah expressed his delight at the strong and mutually beneficial bond shared by Liberia and Sweden. In a gathering that took place on June 6, 2023, at the Executive Pavilion in Monrovia, he addressed hundreds of attendees who had gathered to commemorate Sweden’s 500th year of nationhood, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The event was orchestrated by the Swedish Embassy in Monrovia and attracted an esteemed audience consisting of government officials, foreign diplomats, representatives from international organizations, civil society members, journalists, private sector associates, and well-wishers. The Executive Pavilion served as a captivating venue, adorned with a splendid exhibition showcasing the fruitful partnership between Sweden and Liberia. This display included the presence of civil society organizations supported by Sweden, as well as partners from the commercial and social enterprise domains.
The celebration of the 65th anniversary of Liberia and Sweden’s friendship resonated with a prevailing sentiment of deep camaraderie, underscoring the robust ties between the two nations. It also reaffirmed their shared commitment to collaborate in constructing a brighter future for all Liberians.
“We are deeply appreciative of Sweden’s unwavering support throughout the years, and we eagerly anticipate continued collaboration in the future,” President Weah expressed gratefully.
Echoing the sentiments of President Weah, Sweden’s Ambassador to Liberia, Urban Sjöström, remarked, “Sweden takes great pride in our close relationship with Liberia. We are dedicated to partnering with Liberia in fostering a more peaceful, prosperous, and democratic nation, benefiting all Liberians.”
The cooperation between Liberia and Sweden extends across various domains, encompassing peacebuilding, trade and investment, and development. Sweden’s commitment to Liberia’s development efforts since 2003 is exemplified by its provision of over US$500 million in funding. This substantial financial aid has bolstered crucial programs in education, health, and agriculture. Additionally, Sweden has played a pivotal role in supporting Liberia’s pursuits of good governance, gender equality, and environmental protection.
In the realm of trade, Swedish companies have emerged as significant investors in Liberia, directing their resources towards diverse sectors such as mining, agriculture, and renewable energy. In the year 2022 alone, the bilateral trade between the two nations exceeded US$100 million, underscoring the strength of their economic partnership.
As a committed contributor to Liberia’s peacebuilding endeavors, Sweden has provided substantial funding amounting to over US$100 million since 2003. This financial assistance has facilitated essential programs focused on security sector reform, demobilization and reintegration, and the establishment of a robust rule of law. Sweden has further extended its support by delivering training and technical assistance to Liberian security forces and civil society organizations.
Sweden, at the age of 500, possesses a profound and illustrious history, having played a pioneering role in various global arenas, including democracy, human rights, and environmental conservation.
A significant milestone in Swedish history was the election of Gustav Vasa as king in 1523. Gustav Vasa spearheaded Sweden’s independence from Denmark and Norway while laying the groundwork for the nation’s robust democratic institutions.
During the 18th century, Sweden underwent a remarkable transformation through substantial governmental reforms. In a groundbreaking move, Sweden etched freedom of expression into its constitution in 1766, setting a precedent as the first nation worldwide to do so. This milestone was followed by the introduction of parliamentarism in 1917, marking a significant stride towards democratic governance. Sweden continued to champion equal rights, granting universal suffrage to women in 1921, leading the way in promoting gender equality.
In the present day, Sweden stands as a flourishing and harmonious country, renowned for its elevated standard of living. Notably, Sweden has emerged as a global frontrunner in environmental preservation, exemplifying its commitment to sustainability. In a momentous achievement, Sweden became the world’s inaugural nation to attain net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases in 2018. This remarkable feat underscores Sweden’s unwavering dedication to combating climate change and protecting the planet for future generations.
