The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has preselected FIFA-badged referee Hassan Corneh and FIFA-badged assistant referee Joel Doe for the TotalEnergies men’s under-20 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cairo, Egypt.
Corneh and Doe are part of 46 referees and assistant referees (23 per category), two women’s referees, four assistant referees and six video assistant referees.
The referees and assistant referees will undergo a preparatory course in Cairo from 13-18 February following their arrivals on 12 February.
According to CAF head of refereeing and football technology Noumandiez Desire Doue, they will undergo physical and theoretical tests and practical training during the course.
Doue said unsuccessful candidates will return home and their football associations will bear all related costs.
He said the final list of referees/assistant referees appointed to the finals will be published on 17 February.
Meanwhile-Three Liberians have been selected to participate in the second edition of the West African Football Union (WAFU Zone ‘A’) Nations Cup finals in Cape Verde from 20-30 January.
They are FIFA-badged referee Sylvina Garnett and FIFA-badged assistant referee Hannah Moses, who received their badges for 2023 on 14 January.
Former Class ‘A’ referee Beatrice Mardea Edwins will serve as a security officer.
Edwins is the Liberia National Police deputy commander at depot eight in the Red Light community.
Hosts Cape Verde, champions Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Mali and Mauritania are expected to participate in the tournament.
Liberia Female international FIFA Badge Referee Sylvina Garnett served as reserved referee in the opening Match of the Women’s WAFU Tournament between Host Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau.
Hosts Cape Verde defeated Guinea Bissau 4-0 in their opening Match in the Women’s WAFU Tournament.
