Liberia suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat from the hands of Senegal in the 2020 African Nations Championship qualifiers second-leg clash at the Leopold Sedar Sengbor Stadium in Dakar, Senegal.
The result means, the Lions of Teranga advanced on 3-1 aggregate and they will face Guinea in the next round.
Liberia won the first leg in Monrovia 1-0, thanked to Christopher Jackson’s 89th minute header that sealed the victory against Senegal for the first time in 14 matches.
Thomas Kojo’s boys were hoping to cause the upset like they did in Monrovia six days ago.
And it almost seemed set as they maintained the resilient Senegalese to take the match 0-0 going into the break.
But after the restart, it took 10th
minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock through a brilliant pass down the
flank and Jean Diouf brought the ball down coolly from 16-yard out to neatly
beat Prince Wlame to put his team and country into the lead.
However, the visitors then pushed forward –
pressing the Lions of Teranga as they looked to level proceedings but it was
the hosts who doubled their lead through Ousseynou Niang after a poor defending
and goalkeeping errors.
The midfielder received a clear pass on the left flank, forcing Alvin Maccronel and Daniel Woto to commit themselves before firing a weaken left foot effort that beat goalkeeper Wlame on the near post to grab the second goal in the 73rd minute.
As Lone Star defense looked fragile, and lacked of mobility in the midfield, the Senegalese continued their dominance and they press for the third.
Abdoulaye Ba put his name on the score sheet for Senegal after Niang was brought down by Maccronel.
The forward free-kick in the 80th minutes was too easy but Wlame made a mess of it as they secured their place in the next round against Guinea.
