Monrovia – The Liberian health system is expected to have a boost with the erection of a modern medical oxygen generation plant to be based on the premises of the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital.
The Rotary Club of Monrovia (RCM) embarked on a fund raising campaign styled “Fun Night for Fund”, held at a local hotel over the weekend, to augment donations of Rotary International and other partners to erect the plant.
“When we had the Ebola situation in Liberia, we realized there were so many things that hospitals were lacking; one of them was hospital grade Oxygen,”said N. Oswald Tweh, President of Rotary Club of Monrovia.
Tweh further stated that the RCM requested support from their parent body to ensure the realization of the plant.
He noted that plant will provide oxygen to patients in need of it at the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital as well as to other health facilities at reduced cost to sustain the initiative.
“When we can produce our own oxygen, sufficient to service the oxygen; and be able to sell to other medical institutions at a discounted price, it will be so much better for patients that will need oxygen” Tweh added.
The plant is valued at about US$200,000.00. It is expected to commence in 2017.
Tweh emphasized that the plant, when erected will be nonprofit and hopes it caters to the entire country’s needs.
Rotary International is an international service organization with the aim to bring together business and professional leaders in the quest of providing humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, as well as advancing peace around the world.
It is a nonpolitical secular organization open to all people.
In additional to the plant, RCM raised funds to continue its philanthropic initiatives including the provision of scholarship to the needy.
As part of the fun night for fund, a raffle draw was ignited and people won glamorous prizes including a cartoon of books and rice among others.
