Monrovia – The Liberia National Red Cross Society with support from the Turkish Red Crescent has provided livelihood and psychosocial assistance to 100 children who lost either or both parents to the Ebola Virus in Monrovia and its environs.
The Red Cross’ support covered food and nonfood items including Rice, argo oil, vita, bath soap, used cloth, football, school bag and materials, tooth brush and toothpaste as well as hygiene kits to 20-orphanages hosting the affected children.
The Red Cross head of office for Montserrado during the distribution said while Ebola might be gone, it’s devastating impact remains, adding that the children did not only face the grief and fear but also faced with being stunned by their communities.
Mr. Jackson Wankah pointed out that the Red Cross is going beyond addressing the physical needs, and touching the mental and emotional needs of the orphans to restore their hopes and build their resilience through Psychosocial Counselling as well.
The Liberian Red Cross in 2015 supported 75 orphans in Nutrition in Margibi but Mr. Wankan noted that lot more of the affected children still in need of help when he spoke in Chicken Soup Factory on Friday to start the Red Cross distribution of the food and non-food items.
He added that as a foremost humanitarian responder, the Red Cross remains committed to increase and expand support to the recovery and reintegration of orphans and vulnerable children with dignity and renew hope as they return back into their communities.
In another Development, the Liberian Red Cross with support from the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent recently continued the distribution of relief materials to flood victims from in lower Margibi.
An unprecedented flood in July affected more than 15-thousand people but the Red Cross as a key humanitarian responder is providing relief and recovery materials to help the affected people to rebuild their lives with dignity.
Food and nonfood items donated include rice, used clothes, tarpaulin, shower slippers, bath towel, tooth brush, bathing and laundry soap, tooth-paste and drinking water to 96 family heads.
