PUL Begins Revision of Code of Conduct For Journalists

Monrovia – The Press Union of Liberia in collaboration with its international partner InterNews has commenced the revision of its code of conduct for Liberian Journalists.

The revision of the code of conduct of the Press Union of Liberia follows a self-regulation conference held during the union’s 52nd anniversary celebration recently.

The revision of the code of Conduct is being done by seven professional journalists who were selected at the self-regulation conference.

The Committee is working towards strengthening, restructuring, and renaming the Media Complaint Committee which is currently headed by veteran Liberian Journalist Sylvester Vannie Passewee.

The Committee is asking for suggestions and input from journalists into the revision of the code of conduct.

PUL acting President Jallah Grayfield described, the revision of the code of conduct as a laudable gesture, which will help address some of the ethical problems arising in the media ahead of the 2017 elections.

 “I know there will always be ethical issues in the media, but we can do our outmost to address and prevent them from happening when the revision process ends; this will be the journalists working Bible, there are punishments ascribed if one violates any provision, this is why we are asking for the journalists themselves to make an input into this work.”

The PUL Acting President intoned.

At the end of the revision process, a media council will be set up comprising professional Liberians from selected areas of the society to serve on the council.

Those selected to review the PUL Code of Conduct are Johnathan Pay-leleh, Atty. Patmala Doe-Paivey, Atty. Phillip Wesseh and Winnie Saywah Jimmy. Othes are Hassan Kiawu and Calixte Hessou with Atty. Alphonsus Zeon serving as advisor.
