Harper, Maryland County – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has been honored by the women of Maryland County drawn from Harper, Pleebo Sodoken and Barrobo-Karluway Districts for her outstanding leadership, farsightedness and countless development accomplishments as well as for putting women on par with their male counterparts politically, academically and economically.
The women, through their spokesperson, Ms. Annie Slewion described President Sirleaf as: “Mother, Liberia’s first female President, and Africa’s Architect of Peace and Unity.”
According to an Executive Mansion release, the women made the statement at a dinner held in honor of the Liberian leader on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the Harper City Hall in Maryland County.
Presenting a statement on behalf of the women, Ms. Annie Slewion said the women of Maryland unanimously resolved to give President Sirleaf her flowers while she is still alive.
She noted under the leadership of President Sirleaf, Maryland County among other things – experienced transformation including the enactment of the William V.S. Tubman College to a full-fledged University; named and styled the William V.S. Tubman University with various academic disciplines, the commencement of pavement of roads, the construction of a referral hospital, the restoration of electricity, construction of schools, among others.
The statement noted that President Sirleaf will forever be remembered on the footprint of time. She thanked President Sirleaf for the manner in which she is navigating the leadership of the Country alongside with Vice President Joseph N. Boakai.
Responding, President Sirleaf lauded the Women of Maryland for the honor bestowed on her adding: “Thank you for the honor this evening, I appreciate what you have done.” She then used the occasion to appeal to all Marylanders to keep pressing harder and continue to work indicating:
“We can still do a lot in these last few months.”
She told the gathering that her government has designed a theme “Strong to The Last Mile” towards the completion of the administration.
The Liberian leader admonished the gathering to keep the peace and move forward in making Liberia a better place for all.
Speaking at an interactive Town Hall Meeting in Barraken, Maryland County, President Sirleaf promised to uphold the constitution of Liberia and stressed that she is a strong believer in democracy.
She said when the time comes to quit constitutionally, she will do so without any hesitation.
At the Barraken Town Hall Meeting, she expressed regret over the absence of Maryland County Legislative Caucus pointing out: “They should have been here, except for one member of the Caucus who is bereaved.”
President Sirleaf however commended the citizens and residents of Maryland for their support and reminded Marylanders that there is still be work to be done – noting whether in the private or public sector, we all must continue to work to lift Liberia.
Meanwhile, speaking earlier at a Town Hall Meeting in Behwan, Grand Kru County, President Sirleaf acknowledged the importance of woman in the society and commended the women for their support to her over the years.
While in Behwan, the Liberian leader commissioned the Minnie Nah Maternity Home – a local Clinic in the area.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis Kateh as well as WHO Representative in Liberia – Dr Alex Gasasira.
President Sirleaf has departed Maryland County for River Gee County in continuation of the third leg of her County Tour.
