Liberia: Pastor Arrested Over Toddler’s Death in Uncovered Septic Pit

Rev. Ivy, who is head pastor of Jasper Grant United Methodist Church in Pleebo, is being held on suspicion of negligent homicide.

HARPER, Maryland County – Police in Harper have arrested Rev. Lemeo G. Ivy, a 49-year-old Methodist pastor, in connection with the death of a two-year-old child who drowned after falling into an uncovered septic pit.

The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, May 24, in the New Harper Community, Jacksonville Township.

According to police, the toddler, Erasmus Doe, reportedly fell into a pit located behind Rev. Ivy’s residence and later died at the James Jenkins Dossen Referral Hospital.

Rev. Ivy, who is head pastor of Jasper Grant United Methodist Church in Pleebo, is being held on suspicion of negligent homicide.

A charge sheet from the Liberia National Police (LNP) Crime Statistics Department indicates that the case was reported at 8:23 a.m. by Chief Inspector Daniel Nyemah after receiving a call from community members about the incident.

Maryland County Superintendent of Police Frederic T. Smith Jr., who visited the scene, confirmed that the uncovered pit was allegedly dug by the pastor and had not been secured.
