UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia Bids Farewell to VP Howard-Taylor

Monrovia — Liberia’s Vice President, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, has expressed the gratitude of the Liberian people to the out-going United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, His Excellency Yacoub El Hillo, for being real partner to Liberia.

VP Howard-Taylor acknowledged that   Ambassador El Hillo, leaves behind a legacy of true and dedicated service in support of Liberia and in service to the Liberian people.

She recounted the many programs and interventions made by the Out-going UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, including the UN’s support to the Government’s Pro-poor Agenda for Propensity and Development.

The first female Liberian Vice President was speaking Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, at her Capitol Building Office when she received in audience the departing United Nations Envoy.

Speaking earlier during the visit, Ambassador El Hillo noted that Liberia has made tremendous progress over the last decade   in peace building initiatives making specific mention to the much-publicized June 7 protest.   

He observed that the country has also registered progress, as she has now moved from a recipient country of peacekeepers to a recognized donor country of peacekeepers, pointing to the peace keeping in Mali where Liberia is contributing currently. 

The Ambassador said that Liberia is on the right trajectory while acknowledging that the country has assumed a far better position among the comity of nations. 

Ambassador El Hillo is been reassigned as Deputy UN Representative in Libya where he will also serve as Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator.

He succeeds Maria do Valle Ribeiro of Ireland, to whom the Secretary-General expressed gratitude for her outstanding contribution and dedicated service in supporting the implementation of the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and coordinating the activities of the United Nations system in Libya. Recently the Ambassador was instrumental in mediating alongside ECOWAS, AU and other international bodies to bring the Council of Patriots and the Government together in coming to terms to ensure the peacefulness of the June 7 protest.
