MONROVIA – Liberia has been honored with the Rising Star Award in recognition of the successful development of the policy, regulatory, and technical framework that led to the formulation and validation of its Embedded Generation (EG) Regulation.
The award was received on behalf of the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) on June 22, 2026, by Cllr. Minnie Paegar-Kallon, Director for Legal, Licensing and Public Affairs, and Eng. Assatu Kaya, Junior Electrical Engineer, who are representing the Commission at the Distributed Generation Support Workshop being held at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Liberia was one of only three countries recognized among 15 participating nations, underscoring the country’s commitment to strengthening its regulatory framework for sustainable and reliable electricity access.
The organizers of the workshop the African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR), Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA), and GET.transform commended Liberia for its progress in developing the regulation and encouraged the continued implementation of the EG framework.
The Embedded Generation Regulation establishes the rules and procedures that enable customers who generate their own electricity, including through solar energy systems, to safely and efficiently connect to the network of a licensed electricity distributor.
Commenting on the achievement, LERC Board Chairman Hon. Claude J. Katta described the award as a significant milestone for Liberia’s electricity sector.
“This recognition demonstrates Liberia’s commitment to creating an enabling regulatory environment for innovation, renewable energy, and increased access to electricity. It reflects the hard work of the Commission and our partners in developing a framework that supports sustainable energy solutions for the benefit of the Liberian people,” Chairman Katta said.
He noted that the award highlights the growing recognition of Liberia’s efforts to modernize its electricity sector and promote greater participation in clean energy generation.
The recognition is expected to further strengthen confidence in Liberia’s regulatory reforms and support ongoing efforts to expand access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity across the country.
