Monrovia – The Ministry of Transport has launched the National Road Accident Prevention Program in Liberia aimed at minimizing road accident.
The Program is a government Social Intervention Program introduced by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to prevent road accidents and save lives in Liberia.
In a statement, MOT says human capital is the most important and precious resource of Liberia and thus there is a need to save lives.
According to the Ministry, broken down and abandoned vehicles are factors increasing road accidents across the country.
“This phenomenon accounts for a very high number of crashes in Liberia as a result of moving vehicles running into these broken down, and abandoned vehicles usually leading to deaths and severe injuries of citizens,” the statement said.
Under the Program, towing and ambulance services will be prioritized by traffic agents including the Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Liberia National Police.
According to MOT a fleet of equipment including heavy and light duty tow trucks, well – equipped ambulances and high – powered Police motorbikes are expected to be in the country in July of this year.
The equipment is expected to reduce the numbers of broken-down vehicles as broken down and abandoned vehicles will be instantly towed to a safe place.
The MOT said there will also be a first aid kit prior to the arrival of the ambulance that will administer to accident victims whilst being taken to the hospital.
The program is also expected to ensure a free flow of traffic across the country, increase employment opportunities for Liberians, etc.
Meanwhile, MOT is calling on Liberians to fully support the program which will be a major boost for the economy.
