Liberia’s Teenage Athletes Andrew and Lucy Underperform in Uganda

Monrovia – Liberia’s two teenage athletes at the just ended Cross Country Championship in Kampala Uganda both underperformed during the day lone international Track and Field event that took place on Sunday March 26, 2017 at the Kololo Independence Grounds in the heart of Kampala.

18-year-old Lucy Massaquoi and 17-year Andrew Kpehe finished 93 and 96 among over 700 athletes from Africa, South America Asia and other parts of the world.

Both athletes departed the country on Friday March 24, 2017 along with their Coach Samuel Copper after undergoing three months of training in Monrovia but were not able to finish in the top 50 at the Cross Country Championship. 

Lucy the 2011 Liberia female Marathon winner ran the 500 Kilometer Junior race and finished 93 with a time of  twenty Seven Minutes forty one seconds   (27:41) while Andrew dislocated his arm  during the Cleaning of the barrel of the lap as he fall on his arm in serious pains.

The 17 years old Liberian track and field athlete was only able to clock a time of thirty minutes fourteen seconds (30:14) and ended the 800 Kilometer Junior race 96.

 Liberia’s representatives at the Cross Country Championship are expected back home later this week after another poor performance.

The winner of the 2017 Kampala IAAF World Cross Country Championships will walk away with US$30,000.

Over 50 countries are participating in this year’s Championships.

Besides Liberia, other African countries that are participating in the Cross Country Championships are The Gambia, Morocco, Algeria, Comoros Island, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and host Uganda.

Countries outside Africa are Iraq, Great Britain, Japan, Canada, China PRC, Australia, Brazil, Peru, France, Spain, Italy and Sri Lanka.
