Liberia: Police Launches Investigation into Central Bank’s Staff Death

Monrovia – The Liberia National Police says it has launched an immediate investigation into establishing circumstances leading to the death of an employee of the Central Bank of Liberia.

Matthew Innis, who was the controller general of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), was found dead on March 3, 2019 about 2: 00 AM around the 72nd SKD, Paynesville in what was alleged to be a hit and run incident.

According to the LNP officers on duty, upon arrival on the scene they met two men identified as L Henry F. Davis Sr. and Eric J. Vah, neighbors of the deceased.

The officer said that the victim was seen lying helpless near his vehicle when he arrived on the scene.

“Both Mr. Davis and Vah along with the two officers immediately placed the victim into his own vehicle and took him to the nearest clinic (Peace Home clinic) in the 72nd community but were advised to take the victim to the ELWA hospital,” LNP investigation reveals.

According to a statement released by the LNP, the victim was rushed to the ELWA Hospital by the two neighbors and the two Police officers where he (the victim) was later pronounced dead on arrival by doctors on call. 

The LNP release also mentioned that it has in its possession a copy of the death certificate from the ELWA Hospital which they argued will not be released now to the public due to the “ongoing investigation.”

The release also cautions the public to desist from making pre-emptive conclusions in the ongoing cases which could undermine the outcome of Police investigation.

It can be recalled that during the early morning of March 3, 2019, social media was flooded with the death news of Mr. Innis.

There have been increasing concerns since his death, including discontent coming from the Bethel World Church, where the deceased was a member.
