Monrovia, Liberia – The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has announced an immediate suspension of all mining activities, including prospecting, reconnaissance, and exploration, in and around Ben-Ben Town, Todee Statutory District, Montserrado County.
The directive comes in response to a recent violent incident in the area that led to the loss of lives. According to a statement signed by Assistant Minister for Mines, Hon. Carlos Edison Tingban, the decision prioritizes public safety, peace, and order over mining operations.
While acknowledging the rights and privileges of legitimate license holders who may be affected by this temporary measure, the Ministry emphasized the importance of creating an environment conducive to security and stability.
“This move is intended to allow the Liberia National Police and other relevant security agencies to continue their efforts to restore total calm,” the statement read.
To ensure compliance, the Ministry has instructed its Regional Coordinator, Mining Agent, and Inspectors assigned to the rural Montserrado area to enforce the directive.
The ban underscores the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining safety and order within mining communities and demonstrates the government’s resolve to address conflicts that arise in resource-rich areas.
The Ministry called on all stakeholders to adhere to the directive as authorities work toward a resolution of the crisis.
The announcement was also communicated to Hon. Wilmot J.M. Paye, Minister of Mines and Energy, for oversight and coordination.
The incident in Ben-Ben Town has raised concerns about the safety and regulation of mining activities across Liberia, with this ban serving as a reminder of the challenges associated with balancing resource extraction and community well-being.
Further updates will be provided as investigations and security operations progress.
