Liberia: Man, 32, Gets Six Months for Power Theft

Monrovia – A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in jail by the Bushrod Island Magisterial Court for impersonating as an employee of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).

Prince Bridge was arrested a week ago in the township of Caldwell while impersonating and extorting money from residents under the falsehood of connecting their homes.

The LEC reiterates that the arrest and trial of Bridge is a reinforcement of our campaign against electricity theft. The LEC will use the full vigor of the law in dealing with individuals found impersonating as employees of the LEC or engaging in power theft. The public is once again cautioned not to do business with anyone requesting money to connect them to the national electricity grid. These unscrupulous individuals are criminals.  The public is encouraged to notify the LEC or the nearest police station to report any incident of such unsanctioned practice.

The LEC wishes to assure the public of its commitment to increasing access to reliable and affordable electricity throughout the country.
