MONROVIA – The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) has published the country’s first official registry of licensed medical doctors and healthcare facilities, listing 531 active physicians and 489 accredited health institutions as part of efforts to strengthen transparency, patient safety, and accountability in Liberia’s healthcare sector.
The publication, released in line with the Council’s regulatory mandate, provides the names, license numbers, licensing status, and expiration dates of registered medical doctors authorized to practice in Liberia. It also includes both Liberian and foreign specialist physicians who have been granted professional licenses to operate within the country.
According to the LMDC, the registry is intended to help individuals and families verify the credentials of healthcare providers before seeking medical treatment, ensuring that patients receive care from duly licensed professionals.
The Council said the initiative is aimed at promoting greater transparency and accountability while protecting the public from unlicensed or unauthorized medical practice.
“The publication will enable patients and their families to confirm the professional standing of healthcare providers responsible for their care and strengthen accountability in cases involving allegations of medical malpractice,” the LMDC said in a release.
The Council urged all Liberians to request and verify the licensing status of healthcare workers and healthcare facilities before receiving medical services, describing the measure as an important safeguard for patient safety.
The LMDC noted that this is the first publication of its kind and announced that the registry will be updated every three months to reflect changes in the licensing status of medical practitioners and healthcare facilities. The updates will include the removal of individuals or institutions that fail to meet Liberia’s medical regulatory requirements.
The Council also reminded licensed healthcare practitioners and facility owners that operational licenses and certificates remain valid for one year and must be renewed before expiration to maintain legal authorization to practice or operate.
Additionally, the LMDC announced that effective July 15, 2026, all late registrations for operational licenses and certificates will attract a mandatory late fee equivalent to 50 percent of the total registration cost.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening professional regulation, safeguarding public health, and ensuring the delivery of safe, ethical, and quality healthcare services throughout Liberia.
