Monrovia – Some members of the Legislature’s Committees on Ways, Means, Finance and Development Planning and Public Accounts have vowed to give consideration to gender-responsive issues during allotment of the 2019/2020 fiscal year budgeting.
Representatives Jeremiah Koung and Edward Kafia, who are chair, and co-chair on the Ways, Means, Finance and Development Planning and the Public Accounts Committee made the commitment at a training seminar organized by the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD).
Other lawmakers, who attended the seminar include Representatives Julie Fatorma Wiah and Rosana Schaack. According to Madam Wiah, the seminar broadened their scope of advocacy.
“Our focus is on women’s protection and how to achieve it. We now know what to do in terms of the gender part of budgeting to impact the lives of many women and underprivileged citizens to benefit from their national cake,”
Speaking, too, Mr. Harold Aidoo, IREDD Executive Director said the seminar is to create awareness on the need for lawmakers to see reason for a gender-responsive budget when deliberate on the 2019/2010 fiscal budget.
“We want to ensure that the 2019/2020 budget deliberation in terms of who gets what as part of the national cake is looked at with a lot of gender analysis and lenses. To ensure that whether we are allotting money for Health, Education or Agriculture in respective of which sector gets what those discussions should take into consideration gender analysis and gender lenses in order to ensure the needs and priorities of men and women, boys and girls, the needs and priorities of people with disabilities and other marginalized group that they too can be factored in and taken into consideration so that even in the mix of the difficult economic challenges the budget will be gender-sensitive.”
According to him, with support from the UN Women, they organized the training to ensure that as lawmakers go into the budget allotment process, considerations are given to every marginalized group.
“We are interested to ensure that lawmakers take into consideration gender analysis to ensure that whoever gets share of the budget, it is done in the sense of gender sensitivity.”
