Liberia: LAA Management Purchases Nine Vehicles to Enhance Operational Efficiency

Unification Town, Margibi – The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has procured nine brand-new operational vehicles to strengthen efficiency, enhance airport safety and security operations, and improve service delivery at Roberts International Airport (RIA) and James Spriggs Payne Airport.

The procurement forms part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to modernize airport operations and provide staff with the necessary logistical resources to effectively respond to operational demands.

The vehicles comprise two MGR-S5 Sport Utility Vehicles designated for the Port Managers of Roberts International Airport and James Spriggs Payne Airport, and seven ISUZU pickup trucks, which will be deployed primarily to key operational departments, including Airport Security, Compliance, Electrical, Base Support, and other critical airport functions.

Speaking during the official presentation, LAA Managing Director, Hon. Ernest R. Hughes, said the acquisition represents a significant step toward addressing longstanding transportation challenges that have affected the Authority’s ability to effectively execute critical airport functions.
“For several years, the LAA has operated under challenging circumstances due to the lack of adequate and fully functional vehicles. This placed considerable constraints on our ability to carry out critical airport functions, particularly security operations, airside operations, Fire and Rescue Services, general operations monitoring and response, as well as Port Management and administrative oversight,” Managing Director Hughes stated.

He noted that the lack of reliable transportation had, at times, affected response times, inspection patrols, operational coordination, and overall oversight.

According to Managing Director Hughes, the seven pickup trucks will significantly strengthen the operational capabilities of key departments by enabling personnel to perform their duties more effectively and efficiently.
“The vehicles will enhance our ability to maintain compliance with international aviation safety and security standards while improving service delivery to all airport users,” he said.
He further explained that the two vehicles assigned to the Port Managers would strengthen leadership oversight, coordination, and supervision at the Authority’s two principal airport facilities.

The vehicles and accompanying purchase documents were formally turned over to the Deputy Managing Director for Administration, Hon. John Z. Buway, by Managing Director Hughes.

Receiving the vehicles and documents, Hon. Buway thanked the leadership and Board of Directors of the LAA for the investment, noting that the new fleet would contribute significantly to improved operational productivity and service delivery.

Hon. Mulbah welcomed the acquisition, describing it as timely, particularly as RIA advances efforts toward full aerodrome certification. He assured management that the airport would work closely with the Office of the Deputy Managing Director for Administration to ensure that the vehicles are properly maintained and used strictly for their intended operational purposes.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the LAA Board of Directors, Hon. Nyah Mantein, urged all assigned users to exercise responsibility and ensure that the vehicles are properly maintained and utilized in support of their respective duties.
Chairman Mantein commended LAA Management for its foresight and forward-thinking approach in identifying the need for additional operational vehicles and recommending their procurement to the Board.
The procurement of the nine vehicles underscores LAA’s commitment to strengthening institutional capacity, improving operational readiness, enhancing aviation safety and security, and delivering a more efficient and reliable experience for passengers, airlines, employees, and other airport users.
