Liberia: George G Solo, Former CDC Chairman and Ambassador‑Designate to Italy, Dies En Route to U.S.

Monrovia – Liberia’s Ambassador‑Designate to Italy and a former national chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change, George Solo has passed after a brief illness.

Solo’s sudden death occurred while traveling to the United States for medical treatment, sources confirmed. He passed away aboard a flight that was scheduled to transit in Morocco, cutting short a career that spanned politics, sports, and diplomacy.

A Political Voice Turned Diplomat
Solo first rose to prominence as national chairman of the CDC, Liberia’s largest opposition party at the time. Known for his sharp criticisms of the Unity Party government under Ellen Johnson‑Sirleaf, he positioned himself as a fiery voice in national debates.

His break with George Weah and the CDC ahead of the 2017 elections marked a turning point, distancing him from the party’s eventual rise to power.

In August 2025, President Joseph  Boakai nominated Solo as Ambassador‑Designate to Italy, a move seen as part of Boakai’s effort to broaden Liberia’s diplomatic presence in Europe and reconcile with former opposition figures.

This is a developing story. Additional details will be provided as they emerge.
