MONROVIA – The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Condo Reconciliation Group Incorporated, a United States-based non-governmental organization, Abraham Jaboik Keita, says Condo wholeheartedly welcomes the constitution of a special committee by President George Manneh Weah to mediate lingering land disputes in Nimba County towards finding an amicable solution.
It can be recalled that recently, President Weah constituted the special committee and named it the Nimba County Conflict Resolution Committee. Among other things, the committee is charged with the responsibility to fully investigate the reported land disputes in Nimba County, particularly in Ganta, establish the root cause(s) of the recent violence in the county, and make recommendations for resolution.
The committee, which is chaired by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Co-Chaired by the Chairman of the Liberia Land Authority, is expected to report to the President in 60 days.
In an interview with journalists over the weekend before departing to the United States of America, Mr. Keita cautioned the committee and its members to carry out their assigned task diligently, impartially and transparently void of what he called “political interests and tribal connections”.
“Finding amicable resolution to the protracted land disputes in Nimba County also requires the collective efforts of all Liberians and not only the special committee members. This is why Condo is encouraging the special committee to be willing to accept meaningful contributions from individuals, institutions and organizations, especially those who are heavily involved in peacebuilding and advocacy,” Mr. Keita further cautioned.
The Condo boss recalled that prior to the constitution of the special committee by President Weah, his organization embarked on a plan to make a meaningful contribution to the reconciliation and healing process among citizens and residents of Nimba County.
Against this backdrop, the Condo boss further recalled that Condo at the time called on all parties in the latest violence in Nimba, Ganta specifically to exercise extreme restraint and let the rule of law takes it course as the matter had claimed the urgent attention of the President and the Chief Justice of Liberia as well the Minister of Justice.
“Liberia and Liberians are desperately in need of continuous and uninterrupted peace and stability in order to appeal to the conscience of investors for sustainable development. This in our view is highly unachievable in the absence of the rule of law and indiscriminate access to justice,” he asserting, while reiterating call for every citizen to see peace as personal responsibility which they must uphold as a contribution to the stability and development of the country.
“Condo is committed to doing everything within its reach to help prevent escalation of the situation by working with all parties and other key stakeholders in the county in ensuring a peaceful resolution to the situation, thereby adverting a reoccurrence of the destructive incident,” Mr. Keita, among other things,” added.
