Liberia: BWI Alumni Seeks Solution to Leadership Crisis at the Institution

MONROVIA – The Concerned Community of BWI Alumni, a group of  BWI graduates seeking the resolution of the leadership crisis at the institute,  is again appealing to  President George Manneh Weah to take action on the matter to  prevent the school  from falling into a more serious crisis that could cost the government some economic losses.

It can be recalled that the BWI Principal,  Attorney Harris Fomba Tarnue, was suspended a month ago by the Minister of Education and some members of the institute’s board.

But under the law creating BWI, which was last revised in 1975, only the President of Liberia who is the Chairman Ex-Officio of the school’s board, has the authority to appoint and remove the Principal.

The concerned Community of  BWI alumni says already there are troubling sings coming from the school, including an ongoing workers go-slow over the principal’s unlawful suspension and subsequent replacement.

The group, which includes   high profile graduates, says it believes reversing the unlawful suspension of the principal to get him to return to work is the first step in finding out what prompted the abrupt action against him.

BWI alumni spearheading efforts to keep the school stable include Jonathan Paye-Layleh, Counsellor Jallah A. Barbu,  George Sylvester Mulbah, Emmett Crayton,  Gabriel Buchanan Smith,   Moses Ahoussouhe and Arthur Fumbah.

The alumni say as the nation grapples with serious national challenges, everything should be done to ensure that Liberia’s oldest technical and vocational institution remains stable.
