MONROVIA — Brewerville City, one of the oldest cities in Montserrado, County, Liberia, has been given a facelift, amid the growing of grass and stockpile of garbage in several communities in the city.
This followed the official launch of a major clean up and sanitation campaign on Saturday, May, 2021 by the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema –Liberia, a branch of the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema in collaboration with the Brewerville City Corporation under the theme: “ Caring for Our Environment”.
Among other things, the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema seeks to unify and coordinate the efforts of African Muslims Oulrma, promote peace and religious tolerance, fight terrorism and violence, and make the world better and peaceful for all.
Following the official launch of what has been described as a worthy initiative, about 60 young volunteers drawn across Brewerville City and its environs immediately kicked off the clean up and sanitation campaign, with the brushing of the huge grass, collection of stockpile of garbage and sweeping of the streets and other places.
Prior to the official launch of the initiative, the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema –Liberia donated several wheelbarrows, brooms, rakes and other sanitation materials to the Brewerville City Corporation via its Mayor S. Bedell Fahn, II to help carry out such great initiative.
In remarks, the President of the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema –Liberia, Sheik Omarau A. Kamara, underscored the importance of cleanliness, making specific reference to part of the Koran that talks about ablution-an Islamic procedure for cleansing parts of the body, a type of ritual purification, or ablution. Wudu consists of washing the face, arms, then wiping the head and finally washing the feet with water. Wudu is an important part of ritual purity in Islam.
Sheik Kamara disclosed that the Foundation thought it wise to launch the clean up and sanitation campaign in the historic City of Brewerville so as to boost the local authorities’ efforts in making the city and its environs more healthier, especially during this Holy Month of Ramadan- the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which strict fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset.
While historicizing the cordial relationships between the Christians and Muslims in Liberia dating many years back, the prominent Liberian Muslim cleric pointed out that when the environment is clean, it does not only reduces health risks, but it also promotes religiousness, as the saying goes: “cleanliness is next to godliness”.
He then reiterated call for religious tolerance, fight against terrorism-extremism and co-existence among Liberians, adding, “we must all work together for the betterment of our beloved country, Liberia, irrespective of our political, social and religious affiliations”.
He challenged the young volunteers, including other members of the various communities in Brewerville City and its environs to take ownership of the launched clean up and sanitation campaign in the area for a healthy environment.
For his part, the Mayor of the Brewerville City Corporation, S. Bedell Fahn, II, wholeheartedly thanked the Foundation for the donation, stressing that such kind gesture would not have come no better time than now when the City is in dire need of sanitation materials.
“We are so grateful that you came to Brewerville City at this period of Ramadan, coming to give our city a facelift. Cleaning up is one of our major challenges. Instead of us sharing with you during this period of your holy month, you are doing the opposite. However, we say a big thank you for this kind gesture. And therefore, we want to assure the Foundation that the donated items will be used for the intended purpose,” Mayor Fahn stated.
While also assuring the Foundation of his administration cordial working relationship in making the city more healthier and clean, he encouraged the Foundation to expand its gesture to other nearby cities and communities for their beautifications.
