Liberia: Boakai Leads High-Level Delegation to Guinea for Doumbouya Inauguration

CONAKRY, Guinea — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. on Saturday arrived in Conakry to represent the Government and people of Liberia at the inauguration of Guinea’s President-elect, General Mamady Doumbouya.

In a statement, the Executive Mansion said the visit underscores a significant milestone in Guinea’s political transition and reflects the deepening bilateral relations between the two neighboring West African states.

President Boakai is leading a high-level delegation that includes First Lady Kartumu Boakai, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of State without Portfolio Mamaka Bility, and other senior government officials.

Upon arrival at the Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport, the Liberian leader was warmly received by senior Guinean officials headed by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ismaël Nabé. Members of the Liberian community in Guinea also turned out in large numbers to welcome President Boakai, led by their chairman, Kollie Bobo.

The warm reception highlighted the longstanding bonds of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect that have historically defined relations between Liberia and Guinea.

During his stay in Conakry, President Boakai is expected to participate in the official inauguration ceremonies and hold bilateral talks with President-elect Doumbouya. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in key areas, including trade, security, infrastructure development, and people-to-people exchanges.

President Boakai has expressed appreciation to President-elect Doumbouya and the Government of Guinea for the invitation and hospitality, reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to enhancing collaboration for the mutual benefit of both countries and the broader West African sub-region.

Doumbouya was elected in a landslide victory during the December 28, 2025 presidential election, marking the formal end of Guinea’s transitional period.

A career soldier, Doumbouya previously served as commander of Guinea’s elite Special Forces and is a former member of the French Foreign Legion. He rose to prominence after leading a coup d’état on September 5, 2021, which ousted then-President Alpha Condé, after which he became interim president as head of the ruling military junta.

Under a new constitution that permitted members of the military to contest political office, Doumbouya ran as an independent candidate in the 2025 election. While his victory ushered in an elected government, the electoral process drew criticism from some opposition groups, with concerns raised about the broader political environment and the exclusion of key challengers.

President-elect Doumbouya is married to Lauriane Darboux and has four children. He has pledged to prioritize national unity, stability, economic development, and improved public services as he begins his elected term.
