Liberia: Appeal Committee Under Fire for “Illogical” Ruling in Lofa–Grand Cape Mount Case

Monrovia – The Appeal Committee of the National County Sports Meet is facing a wave of backlash following its controversial decision to overturn a protest ruling in the Lofa–Grand Cape Mount dispute.

By Christopher C Walker

The case began when the Protest Committee originally awarded three points to Grand Cape Mount, citing evidence that Lofa County had fielded ineligible players. The ruling was initially hailed as a firm stance on tournament integrity and rule enforcement.

However, the Appeal Committee has since sparked outrage with a contradictory follow-up. While the Committee’s own findings explicitly confirmed the existence of fraud and collusion, it stopped short of upholding the forfeiture. Instead, it ordered a rematch between the two counties—a move critics have labeled both illogical and dangerous.

Legal observers and sports fans argue that once fraud is established, the integrity of the match is irreparably compromised, leaving no ethical grounds for a replay. By prioritizing a “do-over” over strict accountability, the Committee stands accused of weakening the tournament’s governance and setting a precedent that may encourage future malpractice.
