Liberia: ANC Condemns Ruling Party’s Chairman’s Accusation of President’s Assassination Plot

Monrovia – The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has condemned recent comments emanating from the Chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mulbah K. Morlu, terming it as “Dangerous and irresponsible”.

The ruling party chairman recently alleged that some partisans of the ANC have been plotting to assassinate President George M. Weah.

But in a press statement, the ANC said the recent comments by Chairman Morlu does not only threatens the life and well-being of the ANC but endangers the national peace and stability the country has experienced for the past 15 years.

“In a national statement, Mr. Morlu said that some partisans of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) have been plotting to assassinate the President of the Republic of Liberia. We want to categorically reject these childish, but dangerous accusations. No member of the ANC will ever think of harming the President. That is not our way of politics

“We also view this statement as a reckless one, something not expected from the leader of a ruling party in a democracy. As we have demonstrated from the beginning of this administration, we will never shy away from speaking the truth to power when we feel it is necessary,” the release said.

The ANC is also calling on President Weah to investigate his party steward and leadership for the recent comment and take appropriate disciplinary measures.

“We will never engage in violence. As we outlined after the elections in 2017, we will hold our leaders accountable and shine the light where we should, but we will do this responsibly and this is what we have been committed to and will continue to be committed to,” the release adds.

The ANC also maintains that the “peace and stability of the country squarely rest on Weah-led government”, urging President Weah to put an end to “erratic behaviors and pronouncements from his inner circle”, which have the propensity to jeopardize the country’s peace.

“We are calling on the National Security Agency (NSA), the Independent Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Justice, the Executive Protective Service (EPS) to duly and diligently investigate this matter and bring the truth to light.

“The Chairman of the CDC is under obligation to provide proof of these serious accusations that could jeopardize the nation’s peace and stability. We want to be clear that we hold Mr. Mulbah K. Morlu responsible for any harm caused to any of our members because of his statements,” the ANC stressed.
