Vincent Town, Bomi County – As part of efforts to enhance the recreation activities at the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion University, the 2019 graduating class has broken grounds for the construction of a basketball court on their Po-River Campus in Bomi County.
The construction of a basketball court is an initiative of the 18th graduating class of the AME Zion University.
The project, according to the president of the graduating class, D. Macarty S. Nyemah, will cost about US$10,000.
“The 18th graduating class has decided to give back to the university by constructing a basketball court on our Po-River Campus,” the class president said during the event at the Po-River Campus over the weekend said.
Nyemah added: “We have succeeded in our journey and it is time that we give back.”
Serving as guest speaker, the Co- Chairman of AME Zion University Board, Dr. Benjamin Lartey praised the students for their ideas calling it a “good venture”.
According to Dr. Lartey, the issue of constructing a basketball court has long been overdue adding that there had been numerous occasions where past alumni proposed plan to construct similar basketball but did not come into reality.
“I hope this one comes into reality,” Dr. Lartey said.
“When I look at your proposal, it is good and not large. There is no need to climb Mount Everest when you cannot climb Mount Nimba,” Dr. Lartey said.
He added: “Let me say a job well done to you the graduating class. As you graduate few days from now, you are the ambassadors of this university. Go and make us proud.”
Also speaking, the Representative of District #2 River Gee County Francis Young, who himself is part of the 18th class, pledged his full commitment to the project.
In his words, Representative Young said the 18th graduating class will make a great different to the university. He made an initial contribution of 500 bags of cement.
“There is no university without a recreation center. As long as I am in the Legislature, my presence will always be felt at this institution,” Rep. Young said.
Representative Young promised to lobby with his colleagues at the Capitol Building to support the AME Zion 18th graduating class initiative.
