Liberia: AME University Resumes Classes After Containing Fire Outbreak

Monrovia – Normal academic activities have resumed at the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) University on Camp Johnson Road following a fire incident on campus Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out in Hatcher Hall on May 6, 2026, causing panic among students and university authorities. With assistance from the Liberia National Fire Service, the blaze was contained and operations safely resumed.
University Statement

In a Facebook statement, the university confirmed the situation is under control, saying the fire “has been successfully contained, and academic activities have resumed as normal.”

The administration credited emergency responders for their swift action, commending “the swift and coordinated response of the Liberia National Fire Service and the Liberia National Police, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing the situation under control.”

Students and Staff Response

AME University also recognized students and its internal security team, who served as first responders during the incident. According to the university, their prompt use of strategically placed fire extinguishers helped contain the blaze in its early stages.

The university credited prior preparedness as a key factor in the successful response, noting that fire warden training conducted by the Liberia National Fire Service had equipped staff to act effectively. The administration also praised “the calmness, vigilance, and cooperation demonstrated by students, faculty, staff, and security personnel throughout the incident.”

Investigation and Safety Commitment
The university announced that an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, led by the Liberia National Fire Service in collaboration with the institution’s security team.

“AME University remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all persons on its premises while continuing to deliver quality tertiary education,” the university said.
