Monrovia – The escalating controversy surrounding the upcoming Liberia Football Association (LFA) elections has taken a dramatic turn, as presidential aspirant Sekou V. Keita and the Beach Soccer Association of Liberia (BSAL) formally petitioned FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over alleged governance and electoral irregularities.

In a statement issued Monday, May 11, Keita’s legal team confirmed that formal complaints and supporting evidence have been submitted to football’s global and regional governing bodies, as well as the LFA Secretariat, seeking urgent intervention.
Allegations of Statutory Violations
The complaint centers on what Keita’s team describes as violations of democratic representation and the statutory rights of the Beach Soccer Association.
They argue that under Article 18 of the LFA Statutes, the BSAL is a recognized member with specific institutional rights that have been ignored.
According to the statement, the petitions specifically challenge the disqualification of Keita’s presidential candidacy. His team claims the Elections Committee acknowledged he met substantive eligibility requirements, yet still moved to deny his nomination.
“The submissions seek urgent review and intervention concerning serious governance, electoral, and democratic representation issues affecting the rights and independence of the Beach Soccer Association,” the statement noted.
Demands for Independence
Keita and his supporters are seeking protection for the rights of the Beach Soccer Association and its constituent clubs to manage their affairs independently.
This includes the right to appoint representatives and participate in football governance “without third-party interference.”
The filings reportedly request that FIFA and CAF Review and nullify the decision to deny Keita’s nomination.
Also, they want to restore the democratic and statutory rights of the Beach Soccer Association and ensure the integrity of the LFA electoral process.
Tension Ahead of Congress
This development adds further uncertainty to an already tense atmosphere ahead of the LFA Elective Congress scheduled for May 15.
The football body has been engulfed in a series of legal and administrative disputes involving eligibility and representation.
Despite the friction, Keita and the BSAL stated they remain committed to exhausting all recognized dispute resolution mechanisms “in a peaceful, professional, and statute-guided manner.”
Media Blackout
In a strategic shift, Keita’s team disclosed that they have suspended all radio and media appearances while the proceedings before FIFA and CAF are active.
“In light of the ongoing proceedings… Mr. Keita and his team have resolved, upon legal advice, to temporarily refrain from radio and media appearances,” the release stated.
The statement concluded that the matter is fundamentally about “governance, fairness, democratic participation, and the protection of the statutory rights of recognized football stakeholders within Liberia.”
As of press time, the Liberia Football Association had not issued an official response to the filings.
