Monrovia – Abu Kaba who led Mighty Barrolle to four Liberia National Basketball championships during the 1980s and featured prominently for years for the Liberian national team, is dead. Family sources say, the veteran basketball player who had been ailing for the past two weeks, died early Monday morning at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia. He was 56.
The late Kaba was born September 12, 1962 and is a graduate of the AME Zion High School and attended the Cuttington University College.
Kaba, a 6 feet 5 inches power forward, played for Barrolle from 1981 to 1994 and led the team in scoring for much of the 80s as the team back-to-back titles between 1983 and 1987 on a team that featured other greats like Robert Walker, Lusinee Kaba, Abu Williams, Patrice Williams and Orea Wright.
Wright, who describes his late teammate as his best friend, recalls a man who loved the game. “He used to love playing and winning big games especially against key rivals IE(Invincible Eleven) and Pythons. He was unpredictable and effective on the left baseline and a master of the overhead baseline shot.”
His versatility and knack for scoring made him a regular selection for the national team.
“He was kind, loving, caring and religious-oriented and will be dearly missed, Geebah Kaba, a cousin said Monday.
The late Kaba is survived by his wife, Dussu Kaba, two brothers, Musa Kaba and Swahebu Kaba and a host of other relatives, friends, and admirers of his basketball talents.
