Monrovia – Cllr. Johnathan Fonati Koffa, a former Chairman of the opposition Liberty Party, who currently serves as Representative of the People of Grand Kru County in the House has joined the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

Cllr. Koffa during 2017 Presidential and General Election contested on the ticket of the Party which he once served as chairman for but went his separate way in the runoff election between the CDC candidate then Senator George Weah and the Unity Party Candidate former Vice President Joseph Boakai.
The Grand Kru lawmaker was one of the many members of the Liberty party (LP) who felt the lawsuit filed by the Liberty Party in collaboration with the UP, and Alternative National Congress (ANC) was unnecessary. In the runoff, he openly supported the CDC when his then political leader, Cllr. Charles Brumskine, could not clearly disclose who he was throwing his support behind during the runoff.
On Tuesday, August 21, 2018 when he declared his intention to join the CDC, the former Liberty Party chairman said, his reason for joining the CDC was because of his loyalty for the party and its officials. According to him, while in opposition, people of the CDC showed him loyalty despite their diversity in politics during their opposition days.
“I am here because I want to be a part of the CDC’s legacy. When people show you loyalty in a state of neglect, it is good to pay them back with loyalty and that is why I am here today,” Koffa said.
Representative Koffa, After the 2017 election was tipped to be the next Speaker but it was clear that he was not the choice of President Weah, with the arrangement that the two political parties with the highest number of lawmakers will hold the Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s positions.
Despite interest from other candidates including candidates of the CDC, President Weah saw Bhofal Chambers as his best choice.
The program was well attended by the partisans and officials of the government. President Weah was expected to have attended the program but could not because of some tight schedule.
