Monrovia – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has congratulated the Peace Corps volunteers in Liberia at a special swearing-in ceremony of a two-year program that seeks to help restore credibility and revive hope in Liberia’s educational system.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the Liberian leader thanked the Peace Corps for their invaluable services that will have lifelong impact on the lives of junior and senior high school students who will benefit from their tutorship aimed at shaping their lives.
President Sirleaf recalled asking Mr. Kevin W. Fleming, Country Director of U.S. Peace Corps on his first day in his new job about the resumption of the two-year volunteers program.
According to her – the swearing-in occasion marks a milestone for Peace Corps, the Government of Liberia, and most importantly, for the children of Liberia.
She said: “Your challenge is to inspire them in math and science as the next generation of engineers, doctors, nurses and midwives that will be groomed with the content you teach them”.
She also congratulated the Global Health Service Partnership (GHSP) volunteers for initiating a one-year of intervention on the road to building a resilient health system and rendered special thanks to the group for taking this step.
She recalled how following a meeting some four months ago when we met with Kevin, Dick and Vanessa amid a timely response.
President Sirleaf said by empowering and working alongside Liberian professionals, and equipping doctors, midwives, anesthetists, and nurses with the tools and skills to respond to health situations promptly, and professionally, the GHSP is making a major contribution to the country’s ongoing efforts to build a resilient health care system.
She paid tribute to Zayzay Miller, Becky Banton and the entire team taking care of the Doe Palace, noting that “We recognize you for once again preparing these new volunteers as they prepare to offer sacrifices to humanity”.
She then acknowledged the 51 Liberians who represented the homestay families from Kakata that hosted the 51 volunteers for 11 weeks while serving the Liberian people and thanked them for their role in preparing the trainees for living in Liberia for 2 years.
“You are Liberians and the things they will remember in 2 weeks, 2 months or in 2 years will be those small things they saw you do on a random Sunday. Your influence will live with them forever”, President Sirleaf indicated.
She then challenged the Peace Corps volunteers to be beyond what they have done before; inspire those with whom they work towards professional excellence and a dedicated service to the country.
