Dunah Frowns on Calls for ‘Countyism’ in Supreme Court Justice’s Impeachment Proceeding

Monrovia – As the debates on the impeachments of Supreme Court Justice Kabineh Ja’neh continue into the new year, a former Nimba County lawmaker, Mr. Worlea S. Dunah, has called on Chief Justice Francis Korkpor not to allow himself to be bullied by the new leadership of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) to abandon his constitutional duty if called to sit on the proceedings because of “countyism.”

According to former Representative Dunah, the interest of the rule of law surpasses all interests.

Associate Justice Ja’neh, who hailed from Nimba County as the Chief Justice and the head of the leadership for the LNBA, impeachment proceedings commenced in 2018. They are likely to continue against the Supreme Court Justice this year.

Dunah’s comments are in response to the LNBA’s president-elect— Cllr. Tiawon Gongloe — who last year, had called on the Chief Justice not to sit over the impeachment proceedings should the Senate resumes them in 2019. 

“Certainly the learned Gongloe is calling on the Chief Justice to create a controversy and chaos in our system of government by refusing if called to perform a constitutional task. Truly, the convoluted merry-go-round would lead to a total collapse where the Legislature could be forced to exercise its constitutional powers on the Chief Justice if he refuses to perform his constitutional task when cited,” he said.

Dunah, who served as a former chairman on the 53rd House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee, further stated that Liberia, since 2006 when the first truly democratically-elected government was instituted, has continued to make tremendous progress in areas of strengthening the rule of law and administration of justice.

Mr. Dunah called on the Chief Justice to continually lead the charge toward judicial reforms and better justice system in the country.
