Monrovia – Dr. Shannon May, Co-Founder of Bridge and one of the brains behind Bridge Partnership Schools for Liberia (Bridge PSL) has won a prestigious International Award named and styled ‘Business Women of the Year award’.
She is one of only three 2018 winners from Africa. The award comes on the heels of Bridge being selected among top ten best employers in Africa.
The Business Woman of the Year Award ‘celebrates women who are driving forward business and equality, in their organization and beyond. It is a celebration of female leaders re-defining business today and tomorrow.’
Dr. Shannon May says: “I am so grateful that that through this award Bridge PSL is being recognised as a partner in pushing for equality and inspiring girls to fulfil their potential across Liberia”
Dr. May has been hailed for her continuous efforts in supporting girls education and empowerment in several countries across the continent especially Liberia where Bridge PSL now supports about 20,000 kids in sixty eight schools nationwide.
As part of its work in underprivileged communities, Bridge PSL is dedicated to creating opportunities for girls. A key element of this is the development and support of female role models in its communities and schools; showing girls that there is a place for women not only in the classroom but at the front of the classroom.
Bridge PSL has proven that girls are achieving in the classroom. An independent RCT showed that overall improvement in learning was 60%, at Bridge PSL kids learnt twice as fast; a remarkable achievement.
Across all schools in the program, teachers were 50% more likely to be in school and, when compared to traditional schools, parents of students in Bridge run PSL public schools are more satisfied with school and students are happier.
The Business Woman of the Year Award is an extension of the role that all Bridge PSL women – teachers, principals or Area Supervisors do every day in Liberia. It is a wonderful recognition of those at Bridge PSL who work day in day out to ensure that girls not only have the opportunity to fulfil their potential but believe in their right to fulfil that opportunity.
