Washington D.C.- Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, has applauded President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for receiving the prestigious Africa Peace Leadership Award from California State University, Sacramento, describing the honor as a proud moment for Liberia on the global stage.
Ambassador Conteh said the recognition reflects President Boakai’s unwavering commitment to peace, democratic governance, and principled leadership.
“President Boakai’s recognition on such an international stage underscores Liberia’s enduring commitment to peace and good governance,” Ambassador Conteh stated. “This honor is not only well deserved, but it also elevates Liberia’s standing among nations committed to stability and reconciliation.”
The award was conferred during the President’s working visit to the State of California from April 23–26, 2026, where he also delivered a keynote address at the 34th Annual Africa Peace Awards hosted by the Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution. The forum brought together scholars, policymakers, and peace advocates from around the world.
Ambassador Conteh described the overall visit as “historic and impactful,” noting that it marked a significant milestone in advancing Liberia’s global engagement and strengthening partnerships in peacebuilding, education, and economic diplomacy.
During the visit, President Boakai held high-level engagements with academic and civic leaders, including Luke Wood, President of Sacramento State and an American academic leader known for his work in advancing student success, equity in education, and support for underrepresented communities. He also met with officials of the City of Sacramento and members of the Liberian diaspora community. These interactions emphasized a shared commitment to education, innovation, and global cooperation.
The President also met with Kevin McCarty, Mayor of Sacramento, to explore opportunities for strengthening subnational partnerships in trade, investment, and institutional collaboration.
Ambassador Conteh highlighted discussions on agriculture and development cooperation as particularly significant, noting that they align with Liberia’s strategic priorities to promote sustainable growth and economic transformation.
The President’s engagement with the Liberian community in California further reaffirmed the diaspora’s critical role in national development and Liberia’s broader international outreach.
“Liberians abroad remain key partners in our development agenda,” Ambassador Conteh added. “Their contributions continue to shape Liberia’s progress and global presence.”
Ambassador Conteh concluded that the visit has elevated Liberia’s international profile while opening new avenues for academic exchange, economic cooperation, and stronger ties between Liberia and the State of California.
