Akon to Light Up Communities in Monrovia As Part of Solar Light Project

Monrovia – International icon Akon will on Thursday turn on lights in communities around the J.W. Pearson Elementary School on Carey Street as part of his lighting Africa project.

Akon will join forces with Tikkun Olam and Bridge Partnership Schools for Liberia for an event that will launch the Light To Learn initiative.

He will head for Ganta, Nimba County following the event at J.W. Pearson Elementary School in Monrovia to the Zuluyee Public School, which uses solar-generated lighting technology.

Akon landed at the Robert International Airport late evening on Wednesday, as usual dress up in white shirt and was greeted by students from the Bridge Partnership School in Liberia.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is expected to grace the lighting program tomorrow at J.W Pearson.

Light To Learn is an initiative that highlights the positive impact of investment in Africa’s sustainable power and education, and the importance of developing both sectors as they propel Liberia and the continent towards a better and brighter future.

While 80% of the world’s population has access to electricity, only 30% of the African population enjoys this benefit.

Today, almost 600 million inhabitants live without electricity, particularly in rural areas.

In some countries such as Liberia, there is virtually no access to electricity except by petrol generators.
