MONROVIA – The Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL) has condemned the barbaric and inhumane act carried out against two young Liberian women in Sinoe County.
The women were allegedly stripped naked and paraded along the streets of Greenville in Sinoe County by some unknown men.
According to AFELL President Attorney Vivian Neal, news emanating from the county about the cruel action of the perpetrators was allegedly prompted by accusations of witchcraft levied against the women.
Speaking on behalf of AFELL, Atty. Neal said the action taken against the women is a classic example of entrenched discrimination against women in the society.
She said the incident however highlights the fact that mob justice is still being practiced in the society.
“It appears that some people are not aware that tradition and customary practices which infringe upon the fundamental rights of an individual, right to security and integrity of the person are subordinate and inconsistent with the constitution of Liberia,” she said.
The Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia is however calling on the government of Liberia to bring to justice without delay the alleged perpetrators of such uncivilized and diabolical act, which is totally inconsistent with the status of civilized nation in the 21st century.
