A New Dawn for Women’s Sports: Grand Cape Mount County Unveils Historic Female Football Tournament As Princess FC, Mendemasa Clan Clinch Titles

Grand Cape Mount County – A landmark football tournament aimed at unveiling and promoting women’s football in Grand Cape Mount County concluded over the weekend with organizers and local football stakeholders describing the event as a major leap forward for the development of the female game in the county.

The two-day male and female football tournament, organized and sponsored by H. Mohammed Jaleiba, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of  Princess FC, concluded on Sunday, May 31, in Gohn Town, Tewor District.

According to Mr. Jaleiba, the tournament was specifically designed to introduce and showcase the importance of female football in Grand Cape Mount County, where opportunities for girls to participate in organized sports competitions have historically been limited.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FrontPage Africa, Jaleiba noted that the competition marked the first major effort to spotlight women’s football in the county’s sporting history.

“Our main aim in organizing this tournament is to unveil the importance of female soccer in Grand Cape Mount County for the first time in the county’s sports history,” Jaleiba said.

“We brought together the only two female football clubs in the county Princess FC and Pokpah Queen FC alongside male teams, to demonstrate that girls also have the talent and potential to succeed in football.”

Hundreds of football fans from communities across Tewor and Pokpah districts turned out to witness the competition, providing a rare platform for female athletes to showcase their talents before a large and enthusiastic audience.

Jaleiba praised the performances of the female players, noting that the tournament exceeded expectations and highlighted a growing local interest in women’s sports.

“We are happy with the manner in which the players of the two female teams displayed their skills and talents in front of supporters from across the districts. This is only the beginning of our efforts to promote female football in Cape Mount,” he added.

Princess FC emerged as champions of the female category after playing to a goalless draw against Pokpah Queen FC in the final match.

The stalemate was enough to secure the title for Princess, courtesy of their commanding 3-0 victory over Pokpah Queen FC in the tournament’s opening fixture.

While Pokpah Queen FC finished as runners-up, their participation was widely hailed as a major contribution to the growth of the sport in the county.

In the male category, Mendemasa Clan captured the championship trophy following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Back Rider Association.

Beyond the trophy presentations, organizers emphasized that the tournament’s greatest achievement was creating community awareness and shifting mindsets to support girls’ participation in sports.

Looking ahead, Jaleiba pledged his continued support for female football development, promising to assist players of  Princess FC with both educational and healthcare opportunities.

He expressed hope that the partnership between the club and the players’ parents would continue to strengthen, enabling young female athletes to develop both academically and athletically.

For his part  Princess FC Head Coach Henry B. Passewe described his team’s performance throughout the tournament as highly encouraging, adding that the experience would help prepare the squad for future competitive challenges.

For local football observers in Grand Cape Mount, the tournament represented far more than a weekend competition it signaled the opening of a new chapter for women’s football, sparking hope that similar initiatives will continue to pave the way for the next generation of female athletes.
