Many of the dead were burnt beyond recognition after fuel leaked before catching fire at a busy highway.

The tanker was involved in an accident on Tuesday afternoon which caused it to veer off the road and topple on its side, witnesses said.

People had rushed to the area after the accident to siphon the leaking fuel before the explosion. They were among the victims of the tragic event.

Health authorities have also made an urgent appeal for medical supply to treat more than 83 burn victims admitted to hospitals.

A health ministry official has confirmed that the number of known deaths has risen to 42.
