Liberia: LFA Cites Debbah – Considers Social Media Post “Libelous”

Monrovia – The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has invited former Lone Star Coach James Debbah to a conference in relation to a recent social media post. The LFA stated that Debbah’s statement, which was published without proper investigation, contained “innuendoes inference” that they considered “libelous.”

Debbah had accused LISCR and Watanga of match-fixing in a post on his Facebook page on April 24. Although he deleted the post, it was captured by FrontPage Africa. Debbah claimed that the two clubs were owned by the “emperor” and the president of the LFA’s assistant, Deputy Minister of Sports G. Andy Quamie, but he did not provide any evidence to support his claims.

The LFA cited Debbah to a conference and stated that it was striving to ensure that football programs were free of development that could derail their developmental agenda. In a communication signed by the Legal Affairs Manager, Atty Benedict Yarsiah, the LFA invited Debbah for a conference on May 2, 2023, at its present headquarters at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) to discuss and find a lasting solution to the issue.

The LFA also invited a senior media executive to attend the conference. Debbah confirmed his summon by the LFA on his official Facebook page and described the communication as a “joke.”

According to Debbah, his post was made in specific reference to the Orange cup match between LISCR and Gardnersville FC, for which LISCR won on post-match penalties after regular time ended in a stalemate.

Debbah claimed that Gardnersville FC was denied two justifiable penalties by the central match official who was later suspended for a couple of weeks after the investigation. He added that the match was pinpointed as a case study by the CAF instructors who conducted the just-ended CAF B Licence course at the SKD.

Debbah expressed concern about the state of the national league and the “decadence of immorality” that has taken over, stating that for the national team to be competitive, the national league must be up to standard.
