Monrovia – There is an unusual presence of security in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia as the country is poised to witness what is excepted to be the biggest mass demonstration in its post-war history.
A team of joint security forces comprising the Police, Immigration, Executive Protection Service, Drug Enforcement Service, among others are stationed at all major street intersection conducting thorough search of vehicles and removing taints from cars.
Police officers are also patrolling communities, something that is very unusual in the city.
These are security measures set up to avert possible commotion that might spark from the protest, but many citizens believe the unprecedented presence of police in the street is unnecessary.
Some protestors have already begun gathering on Capitol Hill – the part of the city that hosts the three branches of government.
The organizers of the protest, The Council of Patriots, are expected to present their petition to the Legislature and the office of the President.
They are calling on President George Manneh Weah to govern by the Constitution, curb corruption and provide basic social services for citizens.
