MONROVIA – The Providence Foundation, the humanitarian arm of the historic Providence Baptist Church, has identified with the struggling Phebe hospital in Gbarnga, Bong County with a call on lawmakers of the country to stop squandering the resources of the people.
The Phebe hospital, situated in Gbarnga, Bong County has been in the news of recent due to the lack of electricity and other essential medical supplies to effectively run the hospital.
At the presentation of over seven hundred gallons of fuel to the hospital on Tuesday, the Board Chair of the Providence Foundation, Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr used the occasion to blast at members of the Legislature for allegedly squandering state resources at the detriment of the ordinary people they represent.
He said it is heartbreaking and frustrating to see national leaders especially members of the Legislature parading with thousands of Gas coupons while some areas including the Health sectors are heavily challenged.
Rev. Reeves who is the Senior Pastor of the Providence Baptist Church noted that Government resources are limited and as such it should be used wisely to the benefit of the poor people.
The Baptist prelate described the donation as the Foundation own way of contributing to the smooth operations of the Hospital in these difficult times.
He added that “the donation is part of the Providence Foundation community outreach programs that targets the transformation of under privileged people in society.”
The PHEBE Hospital which is the only Referral hospital in central Liberia has been in darkness for weeks due to the lack of fuel to run the generators, as Doctors and Nurses were reportedly using Chinese lights to cater to patients.
The Baptist Prelate has at the same time asserted that the gesture is a step to genuine partnership between the Church and Phebe Hospital in Bong County. According to him, the Providence Foundation looks forward to always contribute to the needs of the needy.
“The Providence Baptist Church ,the oldest Church in Liberia and the mother of the nation was greatly moved, over news that Nurses at the Phebe Hospital were using Torch light to carry out surgical work due the lack of fuel” , the Baptist prelate lamented.
He emphasized the need by calling on both local and international organizations to come in with more donation including medical equipment and finance so as to buttress the efforts of the authorities at the Hospital.
For his part, the Medical Director of the Phebe Hospital in Bong County Dr. Jefferson Sibley thanked the Providence Foundation for the donation terming the gesture as timely.
He intimated that if the hospital can continue to receive the needed attention in the public, particular from the religious community; such difficulty will be reduced.
When quizzed about the status of the Hospital, Dr. Sibley pointed out that with the many donations coming in following mounting cry from citizens of the county the facility is on a much better course than before.
The Providence Baptist Church through its Foundation good will is in a roll of kind gesture to the Phebe Hospital following media reports, Dr. Sibley asserted.
