Former Chief Justice, Judge, Lawyers Labeled Bad Borrowers

Monrovia – Judge Chan-Chan Paegar, an Associate Judge of the Commercial Court in Monrovia has been named and shamed by the Liberia Bankers Association for owing the Association.

The naming of Judge Paegar is a complete embarrassment to the judge and tents his credibility at the Commercial Court as he has been labeled as “bad debtors”.

The Commercial Court is a specialized court run by three judges including Eva Mappy Morgan and George Klah.

Though the bank didn’t reveal the length of time the money was taken, it said judge Paegar borrowed $24,900.73.

The bank revealed receipt number 286867 as the transaction receipt slips from the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment (LBDI).

The Banker’s Association also named Liberia’s former Chief Justice and currently chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Gloria Musu Scott as delinquent borrowers after she has failed to pay back $11,241.04.00 owed LBDI.

The former chief Justice, who is one of the two females who headed the Judiciary, is said to be one of the bad debtors by the Liberia Banker Association.

Also Kemp and Associates led lawyer, Cllr. Theophilus Gould, was also labelled as a bad debtors for owing the Ecobank Liberia over $47.672.89.00.

At the same time, the lawyers of Sesay and Johnson, including Cllr. Arthur Johnson and Swaliho Sesay are also labeled as bad creditors.

The Association said Cllr. Johnson has US$13,671.58 and Sesay has USD$13,433.57 at the United Bank of Africa.

LBA said it is publishing the names in an attempt to shame the debtors for being chronic delinquents who are unwillingness to honor their arrangements with the banks.

The LBA said it want “to warn that, unless these debts are settled, the debtors may be denied the privilege to do business with the bank.”

The Association furthered that it could work with others banks in Europe and United States to further punish the debtors for their delinquency.

Legal pundits have questioned why legal experts including Judge Paegar and former Chief Justice will be involved in such situation.

LBA has disclosed that since the publication of delinquent debtors, many persons involved own larger sum of money, but it said it will published more names.

The association said the list of delinquent debtors owing Liberian dollars would soon be published.
