EPA, GEF Hold National Dialogue on Environmental Issues Affecting Liberia

MONROVIA – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) will on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 commence a two-day National Dialogue on environmental issues affecting the country at Farmington Hotel, Margibi County.

The meeting will discuss current issues relating to climate change, biodiversity, desertification, international waters, chemicals and other related environmental issues affecting Liberia.

The Dialogue agenda is designed to raise awareness of national stakeholders about the GEF in order to build capacity for effective implementation of Liberia’s GEF portfolio and as well as strengthening the GEF national coordination mechanism through exchange of ideas and best practices.

It will also identify and elaborate national priorities under the GEF thematic areas for the remaining period and discuss preliminary areas of interest for GEF.

The Dialogue is expected to attract and bring together over 70 participants from sectorial line ministries, agencies, academic institutions, international and national non-governmental environmental organizations, representatives of civil society groups and superintendents from the 15 political sub-divisions.

At the end of the Dialogue, participants will identify projects for possible funding under the GEF 7 replenishment period of the Trust Fund, which had allocated US$6.13 Million and 10 million of the Least Developed Countries Funds (LDCF) as a grant for Liberia to address environmental issues commencing 2019 to 2022.
