Gov’t Releases Police Investigations into Death of Victoria Zayzay, Harry Greaves

Monrovia – The Liberia National Police, through the Ministry of Justice has released results of investigations into the deaths of Victoria Zayzay and Harry Greaves.

On October 20, 2015, the death of Victoria Zayzay was reported. Victoria Zayzay was briefly detained in the female holding cell at the Zone 6, Police Depot 1 Substation pending court action, where she was later discovered hanging unconsciously on the cell gate, tied with a wrapper (lappa) around her neck.

The Liberia National Police investigation has established that the death of Victoria Zayzay was not as a result of homicide, but that the deceased committed suicide. The final report of the autopsy conducted on the body of the Late Victoria Zayzay on February 8, 2016, also concludes that Victoria died as a result of asphyxiation by hanging and that there is no physical or forensic evidence that Victoria Zayzay was physically assaulted around the time of her death.

Mr. Harry A. Greaves left his home on January 29, 2016, and two days after, specifically on the morning of January 31, 2016, his lifeless body was found on the beach behind the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Police investigation together with the final report of the autopsy conducted on the body of Mr. Greaves, on February 8, 2016, established that the cause of death is as a result of asphyxiation by salt water drowning.

The conclusion of Police investigations and the autopsy report are also consistent with findings of the Special Investigating Team from the United States of America, which concludes that Mr. Harry Greaves died by drowning.

The Government of Liberia reiterates its regrets over the loss of Ms. Zayzay and Mr. Greaves and once more expresses sympathy to the Zayzay and Greaves families.
