Nimely Scores Late Despite Kokand 1912’s Uzbekistan Cup Exit

MONROVIA — Liberian international forward Sylvanus Nimely was on target for Kokand 1912, but his late goal was not enough to prevent the Uzbek club from crashing out of the Uzbekistan Cup following a defeat to FC Gazalkent.

Nimely found the back of the net in the 80th minute, cutting into FC Gazalkent’s 2–0 lead and briefly breathing life into Kokand 1912’s comeback hopes.

Capitalizing on an attacking opening late in the contest, the 27-year-old pulled his side back into the match, though Kokand 1912 ultimately failed to complete the turnaround before the final whistle.

Despite the early cup exit, Nimely’s strike underscores an impressive run of form in Central Asia.

Since joining Kokand 1912, the former Lone Star youth international has quickly adapted to the physical style of Uzbek football, netting four goals in the Uzbekistan Super League alongside his latest cup effort.

His movement off the ball, composure around the penalty box, and hold-up play have made him an indispensable component of his club’s attack.

Nimely’s sharp goalscoring touch comes at an opportune time for the Liberian national team.

Lone Star head coach Mohammed Erradi has recalled the forward, who previously enjoyed stints in Russia and Croatia, to the national squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header.

Liberia will travel to face Rwanda in Kigali on September 25 before returning to Monrovia to host Mali on September 29. With club duties temporarily paused, Nimely will look to carry his fine scoring form onto the international stage as the Lone Star push for AFCON qualification.
