Monrovia – As Liberia commemorates its 179th Independence Day, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai continues to receive messages of congratulations and goodwill from world leaders, including a message from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with Liberia.
In a statement released Sunday through the U.S. Department of State, Secretary Rubio congratulated the Liberian people on the country’s independence anniversary and emphasized the enduring friendship between the two nations.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend congratulations to the people of Liberia on your country’s 179th year of independence,” Rubio said.
He noted that the United States remains committed to deepening cooperation with Liberia, underscoring shared priorities aimed at promoting peace, security, and economic development.
“On this occasion, we proudly reaffirm our continued partnership and friendship with the Government and people of Liberia. I look forward to continuing our close collaboration on priorities that will strengthen our bilateral relationship and enhance the security and prosperity of both our nations,” the statement added.
The message comes as Liberia celebrates nearly two centuries of independence, with this year’s observance centered on reflecting on the country’s democratic progress while addressing persistent governance and economic challenges.
The United States and Liberia share one of Africa’s oldest diplomatic relationships, rooted in historical ties dating back to Liberia’s founding in 1847. Over the decades, the United States has remained one of Liberia’s principal development partners, supporting democratic governance, health, education, security, and economic growth.
President Boakai has received similar goodwill messages from other international leaders as Liberia marks its 179th Independence Day under the theme of national unity, resilience, and inclusive development.
