A wave of violence has swept across parts of Mexico following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

According to international media reports, including the BBC and Reuters, Oseguera Cervantes died after being seriously injured during a military operation aimed at capturing him on Sunday in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. The Mexican Defense Ministry confirmed that four suspected cartel members were killed during the confrontation, while three soldiers were injured.
Retaliatory Attacks Spread
In the aftermath of his reported death, violence erupted in at least a dozen states. Armed groups allegedly linked to the CJNG blocked major highways with burning vehicles, set shops ablaze, and attacked public infrastructure.
Eyewitness videos circulating online showed thick plumes of smoke rising over several cities, including Guadalajara, one of the host cities for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Authorities reported approximately 250 roadblocks nationwide during the unrest, with 65 recorded in Jalisco alone. In a later update, Mexico’s security cabinet said four blockades remained active in the state.
Emergency Measures and Arrests
Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro declared a “code red,” suspending public transportation and canceling mass gatherings and in-person classes as security forces worked to restore order.
The security cabinet said at least 25 people had been arrested—11 in connection with violent acts and 14 for alleged looting and vandalism. Around 20 bank branches were reportedly attacked during the unrest.
Tourists in the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta described the situation as chaotic, with some likening it to a “war zone.”
Federal Response and International Reaction
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that there was “absolute coordination” between federal and state authorities in responding to the violence. She urged citizens to remain calm and rely on official information, noting that most parts of the country were operating normally.
Several international airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines, and American Airlines, temporarily suspended flights to Jalisco amid the security concerns.
The United States government advised its citizens in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, parts of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León to shelter in place. The United Kingdom also issued a warning, advising travelers in Jalisco to exercise extreme caution and follow local authorities’ guidance.
US officials said American intelligence supported Mexico’s operation targeting Oseguera Cervantes. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described him as a major trafficker of fentanyl into the United States and a top priority for both governments.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security forces continue efforts to stabilize affected regions.
