Liberia: Gender Minister, World Bank Country Manager Visit Todee to Assess Progress of Women Empowerment Project

Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister  Gbeme Horrace Kollie

Todee District, Montserrado County — A high-level delegation led by the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gbeme Horrace Kollie and the World Bank Country Manager for Liberia, Ms. Georgia Wallen, visited Nyehn Town in Todee District on Thursday, November 27, 2025 to assess progress under the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP).

The visit brought together LWEP Service Providers led by Plan International along with local leaders, women-led enterprises, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), SASA! activists and other community stakeholders participating in the World Bank–funded initiative.

LWEP seeks to strengthen women’s economic empowerment, promote positive social norms, improve gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response, and enhance community-level accountability.

During the field mission, the delegation engaged directly with rural beneficiaries, received updates from women-led groups and VSLAs, and observed demonstrations of the project’s community-based Grievance Redress Mechanism and GBV referral pathways.

The team also interacted with health workers, police officers, and SASA! activists leading structured dialogues on gender norms and power dynamics. Site visits to VSLA business locations provided firsthand insights into how LWEP support is helping rural women expand livelihoods, build resilience, and strengthen financial independence.

A highlight of the visit was the recognition of eight women-led VSLAs recently awarded USD 32,000 in first-tranche grant payments, benefiting 230 members (199 women and 31 men). These groups — Laila Village Savings, Willekemah, Fairness VSLA, Kukatune, Quapaigeh VSLA, Try and See Savings, Leesaye Savings, and Peace Mother Club — are using the grants to scale income-generating activities and reinforce community savings culture.

The visit reaffirmed the Government of Liberia’s commitment in partnership with the World Bank and implementing partners, to advancing women’s empowerment and fostering safer, more inclusive communities across Rural Montserrado. Residents of Todee District were encouraged to showcase ongoing progress made through LWEP interventions.

The public is also reminded to report incidents of violence against women and girls through the GBV Hotline (116) and the LWEP Feedback & Grievance Line (4433), both free and confidential.
