The Importance of Sovereignty, Peace, Love, and National Identity in Liberia

President Donald J. Trump: “If you want freedom, take pride in your country. If you want democracy, hold on to your sovereignty. And if you want peace, love your nation”.

Scholar Joseph Ernest Renan: “A nation is a soul, a spiritual principle… a great solidarity constituted by the feeling of sacrifices made and those that one is still disposed to make”.

President George Washington: “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained”.

“Hating your nation brings disaster, but loving your nation brings dignity and pride to the living soul.” – Austin S Fallah (Man-Falos).

This was the theme song for daily class jokes in Bong Mines, my hometown.

My classmates and teachers at Zaweata Elementary and Junior High School can relate.” E-Lo-Ba-Teh, I-Sha-Ga-Sha. Mr. Ola na him sa beeee oooooo, yeh, yeh.

The themes of sovereignty, peace, love, and national identity resonate profoundly in the annals of any nation’s history.

These pillars serve as the foundation upon which a society thrives and flourishes, ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

For Liberia, a nation that has weathered civil conflicts and external influences, understanding the significance of these elements is more crucial now than ever.

Drawing inspiration from the late Nigerian musician Prince Nico Mbarga’s poignant words, “If you toured the whole world, don’t be left aside; the last place you will go, go is your home, oooo. Whether your home good, whether your home bad, home be home, oooooo” I delve into why these values matter profoundly to every Liberian.

I will explore how nurturing and promoting sovereignty, peace, love, and a strong national identity can contribute to a more stable, prosperous Liberia, emphasizing our collective responsibility to cultivate these virtues for all good.

The Essence of Sovereignty:

Sovereignty is the bedrock of any nation. It embodies the right of a country to govern itself without interference from outside forces.

Preserving Liberia’s sovereignty has historical significance, as it emerged from a backdrop of colonial legacies and foreign domination.

The country’s foundation was built on the principle of self-governance, and respecting this sovereignty ensures that Liberians have the power to determine their destiny.

Recently, Liberia has faced various challenges, including economic difficulties and political instability.

Ensuring that sovereignty is upheld means that Liberians can make decisions that reflect their values and aspirations without external pressures.

It reinforces the idea that Liberians are the stewards of their own land, responsible for its governance and future.

A strong sense of sovereignty nurtures a sense of pride and accountability among citizens, reinforcing that they must actively participate in shaping their nation and are empowered to advocate for their rights and interests.

Moreover, sovereignty plays a crucial role in maintaining peace.

When a nation operates independently and respects its sovereignty, it prevents the likelihood of foreign intervention, which can lead to destabilization and conflict.

For Liberia, sovereignty should not only be a shield against external entities but also a motivation for internal cohesion.

Citizens must recognize that their national identity is tied to their sovereignty and that peace is essential in preserving it.

The Vital Role of Peace:

Peace is an indispensable component for fostering national development and unity.

Liberia has faced tumultuous times in its pursuit of peace, particularly during its civil wars in the late 20th century.

The devastating effects of conflict have left scars on the national psyche, highlighting the urgent need for a consistent commitment to peace.

Prince Nico Mbarga’s words remind Liberians of their homeland’s sanctuary; turning this sanctuary into a haven requires concerted efforts towards maintaining peace.

Each citizen, leader, and group must champion dialogue, understanding, and inclusivity to bridge divides and foster mutual respect.

Peace does not merely mean the absence of differences; it signifies the presence of justice, equity, and opportunity for all.

The Liberian government and citizens must collaborate to create platforms encouraging peaceful conflict resolution through community dialogues, initiatives, or educational programs promoting reconciliation.

By fostering an environment rooted in love and respect, Liberia can heal from its troubled past and focus on building a peaceful and prosperous future.

Love: The Unifying Force:

Love serves as the binding force that brings communities together.

In a nation with abounding ethnic diversity, the ethos of love must permeate every interaction.

Liberia’s national identity should foster an inclusive attitude transcending tribal, religious, or political lines.

Leaders and citizens are vital in promoting love and understanding, upholding the belief that unity is the nation’s strength.

Like any other society, Liberians are susceptible to divisions based on differences.

However, love counterbalances these divisions, reminding them of their shared humanity.

When prioritizing love, they are more likely to appreciate the value each tribe, culture, and individual contributes to Liberia’s richness.

Civic education emphasizing empathy, respect, and love for others can significantly alter a nation’s trajectory.

Liberia will realize the importance of cooperation and unity in its quest for progress by creating environments where citizens feel safe, heard, and valued.

As Prince Nico Mbarga’s words echo in the hearts of Liberians, the cultivation of love is essential in ensuring that every individual sees themselves as vital to the nation’s fabric, a true embodiment of the home they cherish.

National Identity: The Cornerstone of Unity:

A robust national identity is crucial in nurturing a stable and harmonious society.

For Liberia, a diverse nation with a complex history, forging a cohesive national identity that encapsulates the experiences and aspirations of all citizens is vital.

Individuals must feel a sense of belonging to something greater than themselves, fostering loyalty and dedication toward their nation.

National identity draws strength from the collective experiences of the people.

Liberia’s history, marked by triumphs, struggles, and resilience, should be embraced as the foundation for this identity.

Leaders can significantly foster national pride by promoting cultural initiatives, celebrating historical milestones, and encouraging narratives that reflect the nation’s diversity.

Furthermore, teaching young Liberians, particularly those born in foreign lands, about their heritage and the nation’s journey fosters a sense of belonging and pride, motivating them to invest in their future.

A strong national identity also promotes peace and love.

When citizens identify themselves as part of a national community, they are more likely to cultivate respect for one another.

In a diverse society like Liberia, the recognition that, despite differences, there exists a unifying narrative can diminish tensions and mitigate conflict.

All Liberians must embrace an inclusive notion of what it means to be “Liberian,” which honors individual identities while emphasizing a collective future.

The Call to Action:

Liberians are expected to contribute positively to their beloved nation as citizens of Liberia.

Reflecting on Prince Nico Mbarga’s message, Liberians must remember that Liberia is their birth home, regardless of where they may travel.

Whether good or bad, they must strive for a Liberia characterized by sovereignty, peace, love, and an unwavering national identity.

They must engage in conversations that promote peace, actively listen to one another, and strive to understand differing viewpoints.

Each air-breathing Liberian can be a beacon of love within their nation, signaling that unity in diversity is not merely an ideal but a practical reality we can achieve.

They must be advocates for an inclusive national identity and representative of all citizens, actively dismantling barriers that foster division.

Nurturing sovereignty, peace, love, and national identity is essential to building Liberia’s brighter future.

The lessons encoded in Prince Nico Mbarga’s testimony remind every air-breathing Liberian that home is where their hearts lie.

Through the collective efforts, they can ensure Liberia is a peaceful, beautiful, and prosperous place to call home.

Let every well-meaning and air-breathing Liberian commit to being positive intellectual contributors to the land.

This ensures that every Liberian takes pride in their nation and works diligently toward nurturing the pillars that will uphold their beloved Liberia for generations to come.

Together, they can create a land of freedom and liberty, a testament to their cherished values.
