The bill, submitted by Montserrado County District #12 Representative Hon. Jerry K. Yogboh, was introduced to the Plenary on July 10 and forwarded to the House Committees on Lands, Mines, Energy & Natural Resources; Judiciary; and Commerce & Industry. The joint committee report recommended its passage.
The bill now moves to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.
If approved by the Senate, the legislation will enable more than 60,000 residents of the Chicken Soup Factory Community and nearby areas to legally acquire land they have occupied for decades. The area, originally reserved for industrial development in 1965, spans approximately 1,112 acres along the Japan Freeway.
Under the amended act, land will be sold at subsidized rates: US$60 for a house spot, US$80 for a half-lot, and US$150 for a full lot.
The area has become increasingly populated due to urban migration, sea erosion, and displacement from Liberia’s civil conflicts.
Following the vote, Rep. Yogboh thanked lawmakers for their support and committed to lobbying the Senate for swift concurrence.
